Inaugural Gippsland Junior Tournament

The inaugural Gippsland Junior Tournament was held over two days at Morwell GC on January 23rd and Yallourn GC on January 24th. The idea for this an event was suggested in May 2024 by Paul Buchanan. His original estimate was that we could expect 30 – 50 players. Both clubs thought this would be well worth the effort especially if it promoted golf at grass-roots level within the Gippsland region. Thanks to the hard work put in by Paul Buchanan, Frank Tabone, Alan Bishop and many others, a healthy number of sponsors came on board to support the event.

Volunteers were recruited from both clubs. Working With Children Checks were completed and cards issued. Volunteer duties were defined and bright yellow polo tops, with sponsor names printed on them, were ordered.

Sponsor banners and signs were made up, water fountains (courtesy Gippsland Water) were erected, Powerade drinks (courtesy Coca Cola) and gift bags were handed out at player registration. Titleist supplied the practice balls for the driving range and gift bags.

Our skilled chefs cooked sausages and hamburgers to feed the players, spectators and volunteers, and LFK On The Move (coffee van) was on-site with food and coffee.

The response to this tournament from junior players exceeded all expectation with 70 players registering - their handicaps ranging from +2 to 54. Players came from Gippsland, Melbourne, Bendigo, Ballarat Bairnsdale and Orbost.

It was great to see so many talented young players, many of whom we will no doubt see on our screens in the future. A big thank you must go to all the parents, grandparents and friends for their support.
